FLORA & FAUNA
White Light Brooch
18CT WHITE GOLD, DIAMONDS, ENAMEL
In 2009, De Beers invited Shaun Leane to design a spectacular piece for their Forevermark Promise Exhibition. Diacore, the purveyors of the legendary 203.04ct Millennium Star and the Ponahalo Diamonds, would be providing the gemstones.
Leane was looking for the perfect metaphor, one that tapped onto his own design leitmotif of flora. His vision; the first thick, white snow of winter. The inspiration came from the line “The sun and moon shed one white light” in Dylan Thomas’ poem ‘From Love’s First Fever to Her Plague’.
The result; Leane’s White Light Brooch, set with thirteen exquisite D-flawless pear-shaped Forevermark diamonds, forming a feathery cluster of frosty leaves, fruits and flowers; diamond-frosted icicles, snowy branches and spiky fauna, in opalescent hand-engraved enamel and pavé-set diamonds.
Each apparition is set with a single pear-shaped white D-colour, internally flawless diamond; in total, over 2,477 diamonds feature, painstakingly handset, weighing a total of 40.68 carats. The White Light Brooch is museum-worthy objet d’art; taking eight months to complete, Leane’s designs push artisans to new levels of technical virtuosity.
