Our inspirations from week four of the New BBC2 show ‘All that glitters’.

In the final episode of the season, working with 18ct gold the remaining contestants had to create a pair of stand-out drop earrings, followed by their own version of a Maang Tikka – a traditional Indian bridal headpiece.

Flora & Fauna

Flora & Fauna, a major theme for the House, explores the dichotomies of strength and fragility found in nature, and the parallels with the human experience.

The Flora style is characterised by the presence of delicate floral motifs, anchored by formidable structures and imbued with a sense of strength and menace. As a lifelong collector of natural objects, barbed and blossoming forms incite equal intrigue for Leane; their beauty being reliant on nature’s balance of dark and light.

For Leane, ever curious about the animal kingdom, Fauna is characterized by the articulated movement of limbs as links; shaped, sculpted & sharp. The precious metal piece becomes a breathing work of art, as it moves sinuously on the wearer.

The first flush of life is conveyed through opulent materials and exquisite craftsmanship. Death, too, leaves a lasting and precious trace, a blueprint for its next incarnation.

It is in these poetic reminiscences of lost beauty where Leane’s work takes its most romantic form. Distilling nature’s essence into a whisper, charged with a knowledge that it will rise once again.

Cherry Blossom

Our treasured collection of freshwater pearls, diamonds and fine enamel flowers in silver and gold vermeil is a reminder from the natural world to be in the present; to capture that moment.

Cherry Blossom is underpinned by a strong branch. Bulbous, fluid and organic, and softened by just the right number of blossoms, scintillated in diamonds.

The silhouette celebrates the naked tree as much as the blossoms, showcasing its shape and size, how it might look in Winter, when it is preparing for the blossoming season ahead.

Loved not only for its beauty but for its symbolism, Cherry Blossom signals the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. Delicate enamel plays with precious silver and rose gold vermeil to create softer motifs to reflect the balance of nature.

Talon

Inspired by the the animal kingdom, the Talon silhouette has a ferosity about it. We witness the sharp claw of a predator become one with the wearer - generously sculpted and bejewelled to reveal not only its beauty but its grip.

Talon is about strength; that curling sharpened point. It feels dangerous, yet protective.

Perfectly executed front to back, the Talon silhouette lends itself beautifully to earrings, from small and discreet to large statement making hoops.

Serpent's Trace

For hundreds of years jewellers have been mesmerised by the Serpent. They have jewelled their skin, placed rubies in their eyes and celebrated their curvaceous generous form.

At the House of Shaun Leane, the interpretation is not as literal. The complex bone structure that lies underneath is what intrigues us – the mathematical genius of nature.

Serpent’s Trace is about fluidity; that hypnotic movement, and the graceful strength of the serpent’s body. The collection captures this unmistakable beauty in each articulated link.

Precious metal vertebrae slide like silk over the skin, each link precisely shaped and integrated with the next. A technical feat in engineering, that took several years to perfect.

A beguiling diamond-pavé snake’s head takes centre stage - dropping elegantly from the ear lobe, or in a dramatic coiled hoop to greet an admirer. Rings trace round and stack on the finger while chokers beckon from the neck.

The Serpent's Trace celebrates unique design, accomplished craftsmanship and a deep adoration for the natural world.

Entwined: Rapture & Ardour

Leane’s amorous leitmotif of flora is sensually echoed in organic shapes, elegantly knife-edged in the Entwined collection. Symbolizing unity & the unbreakable bonds of love, it is the perfect expression of Love & Commitment - all wrapped, enveloped and entwined together.

Echoing the natural world & organic in feel, silhouetted silken curves envelop and enfold a striking diamond from within and accent this central brilliance. Two bands designed to sit seamlessly together, in perfect harmony, celebrate the union the wearers are about to enter into. The individuality of each ring appears hidden, as this romantic unity is so perfectly & exquisitely crafted.

The reveal literally takes your breath away.

Rose Thorn

Rose Thorn celebrates the strength and undeniable force of nature. A menacing thorn on a vine protects the rose from its predators. Long after the roses fade, that vine will continue to grow, producing more & more thorns. We see the wonderful protective quality of the rose plant and how wilful nature is. It just carries on...

Rose Thorn’ beckons with its beauty & plays with Mother Nature, allowing the thorn to steal the limelight, given the absence of the flower.

The motif was born out of collaborative work with Alexander McQueen, for the ‘Dante Show’ A/W ‘96. Models wore exquisitely crafted sterling silver rose thorns on their faces as they graced the catwalk. This scene echoed a shared childhood memory for both Shaun & Lee, where they would playfully stick real thorns on their faces for protection.

The natural thorn on a rose stem is visually deceptive – it appears at first to be bulky & broad, and fools those who cannot see the pointed sharp tip to it. Recreated in precious metal, it is an ultra-refined silhouette, graduated and undulated, incredibly complex to create & perfect.

As a motif it is a graceful armour, celebrating the strength of nature.

The Beetle Brooch

The perfect balance between macabre and beauty. Featuring exquisite wing cases crafted from richly coloured 22ct gold, while the legs and head are crafted from 18ct white gold coated with richly pigmented black rhodium. The eyes of the beetle are formed from deeply coloured cabochon onyx gemstones.

‘My beetle brooch is a guaranteed conversation piece. I take great pride in showing people the finest details, from the meticulously formed body to the delicate movement of the en tremblant mounted legs that tremor along with my own movements.’

The Magpie Feather Fan Earrings

The animal kingdom comes to life in these exquisitely crafted Couture Magpie Feather Fan earrings.

Lightweight, powerful & mysterious. These magnificent layered feathers allow the bird to fly, offering protection from the elements & predators. If damaged, it’s game over - making them a symbol of both strength & fragility.

Comprised of sterling silver and Eurasian magpie feathers, they cuff the ear and dress the head in what can only be described as flamboyant & exuberant.

A new iteration of an original design conceived for the Alexander McQueen catwalk show ‘Irere’ in 2003, these earrings are a romantic homage to the bird kingdom.

Blackthorn

Blackthorn reveals the personal passions and themes that have inspired Shaun Leane’s career; woodlands and wildflower hedgerows. Fusing precious black spinel and lustrous black freshwater pearls, spinel is beguiling in the way it refracts light spectacularly and its dark beauty encapsulates spectacular blossoms in moonlight.

Sculpted into rings, curling into bracelets, or clavicle sweeping necklaces; thorny sterling silver stems, dewy black spinel leaves and the lustre of dark freshwater pearl “berries” - all in the iconic handwriting of the House.

Leane evokes the ease and tension between nature and the human experience, and calls on one of his idols, Thomas Hardy.

Dreaming that sylvan peace
Offered the harrowed ease—
Nature a soft release
From men’s unrest.

(In A Wood, Thomas Hardy)

The Orchid Earrings

Orchid Earrings parallel the strength and fragility found in nature with a tentative feeling of the human experience. Exotic orchid flowers of haunting beauty are masterfully hand-worked using 18 carat white gold, crafted through meticulous repoussé and chasing work which imbues the design with an organic touch. Designed to complement rather than overpower, the Orchid Earrings appear as if growing around the ear of the wearer.

At 8ct, these are bejewelled statement pieces.

A fine micro-pavé setting transitions from white diamonds (1.08ct) through to vivid green tsavorite stems (2.05ct) up to a magnificent single 0.87ct tsavorite “in bloom”. Hand-painted kilned enamel petals echo those found on Art Nouveau masterpieces, staying in line with Leane’s continued fascination with historical design.
